How to prepare for an engagement photo session? 7 helpful tips.

Before we start, let me just quickly sum up why engagement sessions are amazingly helpful.

Firstly, it allows you to build a deeper connection with me, your photographer, ensuring more relaxed and natural photos on the wedding day. Secondly, it's an opportunity to practice being in front of the camera, leading to increased confidence and better wedding day photos. Additionally, the engagement session provides a chance to understand each other's dynamics as a couple, resulting in authentic and meaningful photos that reflect your unique love story.

So, here are 7 tips for preparing for an engagement photoshoot as a couple, including how to choose a location and outfits:

1. Choose a Meaningful Location: Select a location that holds significance to both of you as a couple. This could be where you first met, where you got engaged, a favourite park or beach, or even just somewhere that reflects your shared interests or hobbies.

If you need any help with choosing a location, please feel free to ask.

2. Consider the Season and Time of Day: Think about the time of year and the weather conditions when choosing your location. Different seasons can offer unique backdrops and lighting conditions. Additionally, aim to schedule your shoot during the golden hour (early morning or late afternoon) for the most flattering light.

I think the best time to start these sessions is about two hours before sunset.

3. Coordinate Your Outfits: Choose outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. Opt for colours and styles that you both feel comfortable and confident in. Avoid busy patterns or logos that may distract from the focus of the photos. It's also a good idea to consider the location and the overall vibe you're going for when selecting your outfits.

If you are having trouble choosing what to wear, just think about your session as a date night when you pick out outfits. Something that’s classy and you’d feel good wearing to a pretty nice restaurant.

Bonus Tip: Make it a date night and go to your favourite restaurant after the shoot.

4. Accessorize Wisely: Don't forget to accessorize! Accessories like scarves, hats, jewellery, or props can add visual interest to your photos and help personalize them. Just be sure not to overdo it and keep the focus on you as a couple.

5. Hair and Makeup: Pay attention to grooming details such as hair, makeup, nails and even lips. Aim for a polished look that reflects your style while still feeling authentic. Consider getting your hair and makeup professionally done for the photoshoot.

This can help you look and feel your best, boosting your confidence in front of the camera. If you're doing your own hair and makeup, be sure to practice beforehand to ensure you achieve the look you want.

6. Bring your dog along for your engagement session: Your dog is a part of your story as a couple, and including them in your engagement photos helps to tell that story more completely. It showcases your shared interests, lifestyle, and the love you have for your pet. Including your dog in your engagement session creates lasting memories. It's a special bonding experience that you can cherish and look back on fondly for years to come.

7. Relax and Have Fun: Most importantly, relax and enjoy the experience! Try to forget about the camera and focus on each other. Candid, natural moments often make the best photos, so don't be afraid to laugh, cuddle, and be yourselves.
